7 DAYS BIRD WATCHING KENYA SAFARI SUMMARY

The 7 days bird watching Kenya safari with Kichaka tours will take you to some of the best birding destinations in Kenya. With Lake Nakuru National Park, Kakakmega Forest National Reserve, Lake Victoria and the magnificent Masai Mara Game Reserve. You are guaranteed of a spectacular birding trip. Our safari will kick off from Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park. World famous for its vast flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and a wealth of other waterbirds. While exploring the Acacia woodland and the lakeside marshes you will no doubt encounter many wonderful avian delights including the Great White Pelican, Great Cormorant and African Spoonbill. 

We will later head to Kakamega forest National Reserve. It is most famed for it’s beautiful array of birdlife. Some of the birds here include the following; Blue-headed Bee-eater, Ross’s Turaco, Turner’s Eremomela and also the endangered (due to the illegal pet trade) Grey Parrot. It’s also home to the gorgeous Great Blue Turaco. Later head to Lake Victoria for a bird walk at Dunga Beach. Lake Victoria is a large freshwater lake, second largest in the world. The Papyrus swamps along the shoreline are home to several birds not easily found anywhere else, notably Papyrus Gonolek, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Swamp Flycatcher, Blue-headed Coucal, Whitewinged Swamp Warbler, and Greater Swamp Warbler. The Dunga Beach area at Kisumu is an excellent place accessible by land.

Our 7 days bird watching Kenya Safari will finally come to an end only after visiting Masai Mara National Reserve. Masai Mara is the most spectacular part of any birding trip to Kenya. With its long views over flat-topped acacias and grassy plains filled with animals. Bird watching here will be delightful, and highlights should include Temminck’s Courser and Southern Ground-Hornbill. Other highlights may include Rufous-bellied Heron and Western-banded Sanke Eagle.

7 DAYS BIRD WATCHING KENYA SAFARI ITINERARY

DAY 1: NAIROBI TO LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK

You will be picked up at the airport/hotel within the city centre by our company representatives and the driver guide in the morning then drive to Lake Nakuru. Arrive in time for lunch. Afterwards, enjoy a birding drive with an opportunity of seeing millions of Greater & Lesser Flamingo besides thousands of other bird sightings include The Great White Pelican, Little Grebe, as well as rare Martial Eagle, Lesser Kestrel & Madagascar Squacco Heron. On your drive, you may also encounter wild-game like the water bucks, buffalo, warthog, hippo, and lion among others.

DAY 2: LAKE NAKURU TO KAKAMEGA FOREST RESERVE

Check out at the hotel after breakfast early in the morning and head out for another birding drive at Lake Nakuru National Park. Later leave the park and drive to Kakamega National Reserve. Kakamega forest avi fauna is unique not only nationally, but continentally. Several species have isolated, rellict here include; Ansorge’s Greenbul, Blue-headed Bee-eater, Chapin’s Flycatcher and Turner’s Eromomela.

DAY 3; KAKAMEGA FOREST FULL DAY BIRDING

Head out with picnic lunch after breakfast for a full day bird watching in Kakamega forest. Birds here include Grey Parrot, Blue Headed Bee Eater, Black Billed Turaco, Turners Eremomela. Other than those species mention above, others include; Banded Snake Eagle, African Crowned Eagle, Red-chested  Owlet, Toro-Olive and Honeyguide Greenbul, Grey-chested Illadopsis, Grey-winged and Blue-shouldred Robi, Southern Hyliota and Yellow-bellied Wattle eye.

DAY 4: KAKAMEGA FOREST TO LAKE VICTORIA

Leave Kakamega in the morning and head to Lake victoria. The Dunga Beach area at Kisumu is an excellent place for bird watching. This swamp is one of the most reliable IBA site in Kenya for the scarce and threatened Papyrus yellow warbler. It is also an important home for Papyrus gonolek, white winged warbler and Papyrus canary, all papyrus endemics. There are also a host of other aquatic birds.

DAY 5: LAKE VICTORIA TO MASAI MARA

Leave Kissumu in the Morning and drive to Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrive in the afternoon, Have lunch awaiting for an afternoon game drive in search of Masai Mara Birds which include the Black-bellied and Kori Bustard.

DAY 6: MASAI MARA FULL DAY

Spend the whole day birding in Masai Mara National Reserve with either a morning and an afternoon game drive or a full day in the reserve with picnic lunch. Bird watching highlights include Temminck’s Courser, Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, Black-bellied and Kori Bustard, Southern Ground-Hornbill.

DAY 7: MASAI MARA TO NAIROBI

After breakfast, drive to Nairobi. Lunch will be served at the famous carnivore “beast of a feast” restaurant, where a variety of meats including ostrich, crocodile and camel are roasted over charcoal and carved at your table. Set in attractive tropical gardens, the service and the decor are outstanding. The restaurant also caters for vegetarians with wide variety of array to choose from. After this you will be transferred to your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ready for home-bound flight.
