Your 3 days Tsavo East & Taita Hills Game Sanctuary Safari starts at Tsavo East National Park. The sight of dust-red elephants wallowing, rolling and spraying each other with the midnight blue waters of palm-shaded Galana River is one of the most evocative images in Africa. The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya. It is home to most of the larger mammals especially herds of dust red elephants. Tsavo East is generally flat, with dry plains across which the Galana River flows.
In 1898, long before Tsavo Park was created, a pair of mane less male lions terrorized the area. They reputedly killed 135 railway workers who were building the Kenya-Uganda railway. These man-eating lions dragged men from their tents, despite the thorn fences (bomas) built to keep them out. The mane less lions evaded traps and ambushes.
Later proceed to visit The Taita Hills which lies to the south of Tsavo West and on the fertile land in the saddles between the main peaks the Taita tribe. The Taita Hills Game Sanctuary lies on the plains below the hills. It is home to elephant, lion, oryx, lesser kudu and a wide variety of smaller animals. The variety of animals living in this small sanctuary are often easier to spot than in the larger Parks.
The Sanctuary is a success story in sustainable conservation where wildlife – including elephant, lion, buffalo and giraffe – thrive. Our guides control game drives tightly and ensure that there is no animal harassment and may sometimes close some areas. The commitment to responsible ecotourism has been so well supported by visitors. It ensures that the Taita Hills Game Sanctuary and all its wildlife will continue to prosper.
